OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers are pleased to announce that eight-time Major League All-Star and four-time World Series Champion, Darryl Strawberry, will be appearing at several Storm Chasers' events on Wednesday, July 18, including speaking with area youth about life and the basics of baseball at Chasers FUNdamentals. Strawberry will also appear at Werner Park for a meet-and-greet during the Storm Chasers game against the Oklahoma City RedHawks later that night.
"To have Darryl visit Omaha and talk with the children at Chasers FUNdamentals is a real honor," said Omaha Storm Chasers President and General Manager, Martie Cordaro. "Darryl has accomplished so much in his life and we jumped at the opportunity to have him visit fans at Werner Park as well."
Strawberry will visit the baseball fields at Hillside Little League on Wednesday to participate in Chasers FUNdamentals. At that time he will speak to area youth from the various Omaha-area and Carter Lake, Iowa Boys and Girls Clubs and children from the Salvation Army North Corp. His presentation will focus on the benefits of hard work and dedication, as well as the ins-and-outs of the game of baseball. That evening, Strawberry will toss out the ceremonial first pitch and will participate in a meet-and-greet with fans that will occur approximately from 7 to 8 p.m.
The 1983 National League Rookie of the Year played for four teams in a career that spanned 17 years. He hit .259 for his career, belted 335 home runs and drove in exactly 1,000 runs, with arguably his best season coming in 1987 as Strawberry hit .284 with 39 home runs and 104 RBI, en-route to a sixth place finish in the NL Most Valuable Player race. The former Met, Dodger, Giant and Yankee finished in the top-10 in MVP voting four times, finishing as high as second in 1988 to Kirk Gibson, as well as earning a Silver Slugger award in 1988 and 1990. Strawberry played the majority of his time in the Majors with the New York Mets, whom he helped guide to the 1986 World Series, defeating the Boston Red Sox in a historic seven-game series.
