July 17, 2012
For Immediate Release
Jupiter, Fla.- The Palm Beach Cardinals have announced that All-Star Anthony Ferrara Jr. has been transferred to the Double-A Springfield Cardinals. Ferrara becomes the sixth Palm Beach starting pitcher to be moved to the St. Louis Cardinals Double-A affiliate.
The 22-year old Ferrara was selected in the seventh round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Riverview High School. A native of Riverview, FL, Ferrara made 16 starts for the Palm Beach Cardinals, posting a 5-7 record with a 3.65 ERA. He limited the opposition to a .252 batting average, while striking out 70 batters in 91 1/3 innings.
Ferrara was not the only Palm Beach Cardinal to be moved on Tuesday, as pitcher Bradley Watson was transferred to Low-A Quad Cities, while catcher Luis De La Cruz was placed on the 7-day disabled list. Watson made seven appearances with the Cardinals, recording a 0-3 record with a 6.83 ERA.
De La Cruz will be nursing a strain hip flexor and will work his way back to the starting lineup. Before the injury, De La Cruz had picked up at least one hit in eight of his last 10 games, raising his average to a season best .296.
In corresponding moves, the Cardinals received pitchers Kyle Hald, Travis Miller and infielder Neal Pritchard from Low-A affiliate Quad Cities. All three players have been with the organization for one season. Kyle Hald will fill the spot in the rotation left by Ferrara, as he will make his FSL debut on Friday night against Brevard County, while Miller will work out of the pen. Pritchard will add versatility to Palm Beach, as he has played everywhere for the Quad Cities River Bandits.
The Palm Beach Cardinals (12-13) return to action tonight, as they host the Lakeland Flying Tigers in game three of their four-game set at 6:35 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cardinals are currently in second place in the South Division and two games back of the front-running Bradenton Marauders (14-11) in the second-half standings.
