'Gades Ground Cyclones 4-1 Tuesday
The 'Gades (17-12) allowed just four hits and one walk to the Cyclones (18-11), and drew one game closer in the McNamara Division standings. The Renegades can earn a tie atop the division with a win Wednesday against the Cyclones at Dutchess Stadium.
Hudson Valley opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Luke Maile came up to lead off the frame, facing off against Cyclones starter Julian Hilario (0-2). The Renegades catcher scorched a fastball over the right field fence for a solo homer (the first of his career) to put the Renegades up 1-0 early on.
The 'Gades struck again in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, shortstop Ryan Dunn lined a single to left field. Left fielder Joel Caminero and right fielder Marty Gantt both drew walks to load up the bases for Michael Williams. The Hudson Valley first baseman dropped a single into shallow center to plate Dunn and keep the bases loaded. Third baseman Leonardo Reginatto scorched a double to left field that scored Caminero and Gantt, running the score to 4-0 in favor of the Renegades.
Brooklyn came up with their only scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Eudy Piña sent a line-drive double to left field. After Juan Gamboa struck out swinging, Brandon Nimmo banged his own double off the right-field wall. Gamboa came around to score on the play, and cut the lead for the Renegades to 4-1. But the Renegades locked down after that, preventing any more scoring by the hometown team and securing the 4-1 victory.
Renegades starter Jesse Hahn tossed four fantastic frames, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Eduar Quiñonez (2-1) allowed a run on three hits and a walk over five innings; he struck out four and hit two batters. The long relief appearance from Quiñonez took on extra value, as it allowed Hudson Valley manager Jared Sandberg to spare the rest of his bullpen for the day.
Hilario took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over 3.1 innings of work; he struck out two. Ernesto Yanez threw 1.2 innings of relief, giving up just one hit and striking out two. Matthew Koch tossed two scoreless frames, allowing a hit and a walk while whiffing two. Logan Taylor finished the action for Brooklyn with two perfect innings.
The Renegades and Cyclones will tangle again Wednesday, with lefty Matt Spann on the hill for Hudson Valley against Rainy Lara for the Cyclones.
