Alex Mejia's Summer Job.
Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, Batavia Muckdogs shortstop Alex Mejia still appreciates the moments that got him here.
Mejia was a member of the 2012 Arizona Wildcats baseball team that beat South Carolina to win their first College World Series since 1986. When asked what his favorite moment of the College World Series was, Mejia responded by simply saying, "winning it."
Mejia admits that the College World Series victory is his best experience in baseball so far, but also understands that there are many more moments ahead of him, if he keeps putting the work in.
"I need to work to be consistent," Mejia said. "I need to be able to help the team any way possible...I need to give 100-percent every game. Don't give up at-bats."
Mejia certainly didn't give up at-bats for the Wildcats in the 2012 season. Mejia batted .357 in 2012 and slugged .478, helping him win the Pac-10 Player of the Year award. His defense is also an important aspect to his game. He is considered a plus-defender by many scouts, as he recorded a .960 fielding percentage at shortstop.
"Defense is my best talent," Mejia pointed out. "I spend just as much time with both (hitting and fielding)."
Those abilities, coupled with his winning mentality, are likely the reason so many teams expressed interest in the 22-year-old shortstop.
"There were plenty of other teams ahead of the Cardinals," Mejia pointed out. "Other teams expressed more interest. I had no clue."
Things became clearer as the Cardinals were on the clock in the fourth round, with the 150th overall pick in the draft.
"I was relieved and excited at the same time," Mejia admitted.
His excitement from the draft has morphed into a new summer job here in Batavia. Mejia has been slotted at the top at the lineup for the Muckdogs this season and is doing a solid job so far. In 14 games so far, Mejia is batting .283 with five doubles and six runs batted in.
Though, it's a small sample size, there will be many opportunities in the coming weeks for Mejia to demonstrate what so many scouts see in him.
As for Mejia's long-term goals, he doesn't hope to find himself job searching in the near future, unless, of course, it's through free-agency at the Major League level.
"[My long-term goal is to] make it to the Majors, obviously," said Mejia. "I need to stay healthy and be in the best shape possible to get the best opportunity."
If all goes to plan, Mejia won't be spending too much time here with the Muckdogs. So come see him while you can, Batavians!
