Robel Garcia delivers a walk off winner
It looked like the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Jamestown Jammers were destined to play extra innings on Sunday afternoon. The Scrappers offense had struggled all afternoon, stranding eight runners on base. But Robel Garcia decided he didn't feel like playing extras and delivered a 3-2 base hit to score Erik Gonzalez with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Scrappers split the two game series with Jamestown with the 2-1 win.
Luis DeJesus took the mound to start for Mahoning Valley. DeJesus continued his march through the New York Penn League hitters. He worked five innings while holding the Jammers to one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out one. Robbie Aviles and Michael Peoples combined for two shutout innings as well. Rafael Homblert pitched the two innings to pick up his first win of the season.
While the offense struggled early, Joe Sever made sure that the game would at least be tied after the fourth inning. Tyler Naquin led off the inning with a hustle double to sort left field. He would move to third on a wild pitch. Then Sever delivered his second hit of the game, an RBI single through the right side to score Naquin to tie the game at one. It would stay that way until Garcia's game ending hit.
The Scrappers will now head to Williamsport, PA for two games. They will return home on Wednesday, July 25th to take on the Staten Island Yankees. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
