Bulls Grind Out 10-8 Win At Gwinnett

July 25, 2012
Lawrenceville, GA --- The Durham Bulls turned a game-ending double play with the bases loaded to finalize a 10-8 victory in the series opener over the Gwinnett Braves on Tuesday night.

Leading 10-8, the Braves (47-58) filled the bases after scoring a run against Bryan Augenstein (S, 3) before Ruben Gotay smacked a hard two-hopper to Will Rhymes, who quickly fed Tim Beckham flying across the bag, and the relay capped the Bulls' (49-56) third straight win.

After Alex Torres was knocked out after just 2 1/3 innings, and with the Bulls extremely thin in the bullpen, Brandon Gomes (W, 5-2), Frank De Los Santos and Augenstein combined for the final 7 2/3 innings.

The Bulls took a 2-0 lead in the first against Julio Teheran after Rich Thompson led the game off with a triple, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rhymes. After a double by Stephen Vogt, Leslie Anderson singled to score the second run.

Torres took a 2-0 lead into the third, but was knocked out as the Braves scored five runs, sending 10 hitters to the plate. The key hit against Torres was a bases loaded, two-run single by Ernesto Mejia to cap a 12-pitch at-bat.

Durham scored four runs in the top of the fourth to knock out Julio Teheran. As the lead bounced back and forth, the Bulls went ahead on a two-run double by Jesus Feliciano to put Durham ahead 9-7.

Gomes worked 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs to earn the win, while De Los Santos pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and fanning two.

Augenstein, who worked 33 pitches on Sunday en route to the win against Rochester.

The Bulls had 16 hits in the win, with Thompson, Beckham and Figueroa delivering three hits apiece.
