Cron Caps Comeback with Walkoff Grand Slam

July 26, 2012

San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers took down the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 10-6 with a walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning by California League RBI leader C.J. Cron. The blast was Cron's 18th of the year and 2nd grand slam of the season.
"I was trying to hit something out," said Cron. "I was actually late on the first pitch so I prepared myself for the second one. I saw the slider hanging and put a good swing on it."
Inland Empire got off to a fast start in the first inning as 66ers third baseman Kaleb Cowart launched a two run homer to right field for his 4th of the year off of Quakes starter Andres Santiago help get of an early 3-0 hole. Cowart had a big night as he went 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Jean Almanzar had perhaps the most critical hit of the game as he hit a game tying RBI triple off of Quakes closer Eric Eadington in the 9th inning. Alamazar went 2-for-5 on the night. Eadington had only blown one save before tonight's game and is now 22 for 24 in save opportunities.
66ers starter Andrew Smith struggled with his pitching as he went five innings, giving up six earned runs, and striking out four batters. Smith though would get off the hook with the no-decision. 66ers reliever Eric Cendejas pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win to improve to 3-2 on the year. Quakes reliever Eammon Portice gave up Cron's grand slam to take the loss and fall to 0-2.
