Lemmerman, Lookouts Take Down M-Braves
Former Lookout Brent Leach took the mound for the Braves (17-23; 47-63), and he struggled against his former team. Over 5 2/3 innings, he gave up nine hits for eight runs, four earned, striking out four and walking two. A throwing error by Joey Terdoslavich in the first helped the Lookouts to four unearned.
Rafael Ynoa led off the first inning with a single to left and Nick Buss grounded one to Terdoslavich at first. He tried to start a double play but threw the ball into left field, putting men at the corners. Blake Smith walked to load the bases with nobody away, setting up a JT Wise two-run single to put the Lookouts ahead.
After two flyouts to center, shortstop Jake Lemmerman stepped in and cleared the bases with a double, putting Chattanooga up 5-0.
And that was only the beginning for Lemmerman. He finished the day for the Lookouts (24-17; 55-53) 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI.
Mississippi started a comeback in the fourth, chipping away for two unearned runs off of Matt Magill. After Terdoslavich reached to lead off the fourth on an error, Evan Gattis hit his second triple of the road trip to bring him in. Three batters later, Phil Gosselin scorched a single to score Gattis, pulling the Braves to 5-2.
The Lookouts, though, came right back with two more in the bottom of the inning. It was Lemmerman again, this time hitting a ground-rule double after an Anthony Jackson walk to put two in scoring position. Starting pitcher Matt Magill helped his own cause by singling to score Jackson, and Lemmerman scored on a squeeze play by Nick Buss. That made it 7-2, Lookouts.
Chattanooga scored one in the sixth on Lemmerman's home run to boost their lead, and the Braves scored a run in the eighth to pull it to the final of 8-3.
Leach took the loss, his fourth. Magill earned his ninth win of the season, allowing just three unearned runs on five hits while striking out 12 and walking just one.
The Braves look to turn around this three-game losing streak on Saturday night as they square off with the Lookouts in game two from Chattanooga at 6:15 PM CT. David Hale (6-4, 4.28) takes the mound for the Braves against left-hander Aaron Miller (5-6, 4.11).
