Manny Machado gets call to Baltimore

2011 Shorebirds all star moving to major leagues

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds are excited that former Shorebirds shortstop Manny Machado has been called up to the major leagues as announced by the Baltimore Orioles on August 8. Machado will become the 75th former Shorebirds player to make his major league debut.

The 20-year played for the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2011 after being drafted third overall in 2010. He is the highest drafted player ever to suit up for the Shorebirds. Machado did not disappoint while on the Eastern Shore. In 38 games before a promotion to Frederick, he batted .276 with eight doubles, six home runs and 24 RBIs. The Hialeah, Florida native had 11 multi-hit games in his first 23 with the Shorebirds. He was named to the 2011 South Atlantic League All-Star Game, which he played in at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

This season, Machado has shined up in Double-A Bowie. Over 109 games played, he was batting .266 with 26 doubles, 11 home runs and 59 RBIs. Through seven games in the month of August, he hit .462 (12-of-26) with two home runs and five RBIs.

Machado came into 2012 rated as the #2 prospect in the Orioles organization and the #11 prospect overall by Baseball America. He played in the MLB Futures Game in Kansas City in July, going 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

The last former Shorebirds player to make his MLB debut was Joe Mahoney on July 7 of this year.
