Dylan Bundy Wins in Debut
"They weren't swinging at too many balls up, but I made quality pitches pretty much when I needed to with guys on base," Bundy said. "Off-speed stuff was on and off all night. It wasn't great, but it was there."
The Baysox (64-58) went on to sweep the Erie SeaWolves (53-68) in a doubleheader Tuesday evening. Behind Bundy, the Baysox won game 1 5-3 and right-handed starter Tim Bascom pitched six innings as the team shutout Erie 6-0 in game 2. With the win, the Baysox are a season-high six games over .500.
"[Bundy] pitched well tonight," said Pitching Coach Kennie Steenstra. "That's a pretty good team we faced; they have a good hitting lineup and I was really impressed with the amount of strikes he threw. He had that one little battle where he walked a couple guys and got out of sync a little bit, but outside of that, he pounded the zone, threw a lot of strikes and did a good job minimizing the damage in the inning where we made the error behind him."
The Baysox struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Erie starter Jared Wesson. Third baseman Zelous Wheeler reached on a fielding error and right fielder Ronnie Welty singled to center field. Catcher Brian Ward brought Wheeler home with a single to right field that moved Welty to third base where he scored on a sacrifice fly by center fielder Jai Miller to make the score 2-0.
Erie got one run back in the top of the third against Bundy. Brandon Douglas hit a lead off double to left field and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Jones. James McCann plated Douglas with a groundout to shortstop that made the score 2-1.
Bowie extended the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Jonathan Schoop walked, moved to second base on a balk and third on a Ty Kelly groundout. He scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Robbie Widlansky to give the Baysox a 3-1 lead.
The SeaWolves got the run right back in the top of the fourth after the Baysox ran into some two out trouble. Jordan Lennerton hit a one out double down the right field line and moved to third base when Avisail Garcia grounded out. Daniel Fields then drew a walk and Lennerton scored from third after a throwing error by Schoop on a throw to first that extended the inning and made the score 3-2.
The Baysox answered again in the bottom of the fourth when Wheeler hit a lead off home run off the scoreboard in left-center field. Welty followed with a single to left field, moved to second on a ground out by Ward and scored on a double to left field by left fielder Josh Barfield to make the score 5-2.
Erie got the scoring started again in the top of the sixth inning. Fields hit a one out double to left field that ended Bundy's night as reliever Mike Belfiore replaced him on the mound. With two outs, Corey Jones singled to center field to plate Fields and make the score 5-3.
Belfiore recorded the final two outs of the sixth inning, allowing one hit while striking out one batter and walking one. Closer Kyler Newby earned his 14th save of the season after striking out the side in the top of the seventh inning.
Wesson was tagged with the loss, pitching five and one-third innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out one batter and walking two.
The Baysox again used a sacrifice fly to take the early lead in game two against Erie starter Rob Waite. In the bottom of the third, center fielder Antoan Richardson was hit by a pitch, moved to third base on a single to left field by Schoop and scored on a sacrifice fly by Widlansky to give Bowie a 1-0 lead.
Bowie extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning against Erie reliever Kenny Faulk. Barfield hit a lead off single to center field and moved to second base when Richardson walked. With one out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Ty Kelly singled to right field. Widlansky followed with a walk and Caleb Joseph singled to left field to load the bases still with one out. Rhyne Hughes then singled to center field to bring two runs home and give the Baysox a 5-0 lead. Robbie Weinhardt replaced Faulk on the mound to finish the inning.
The Baysox added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning against reliever Tyler Clark. Barfield hit a lead off double to left field and moved to third base on a Richardson groundout. With two outs, Kelly plated Barfield with a single to center field to give the Baysox a 6-0 lead. The run gave Kelly a 4-RBI game.
Bascom pitched six scoreless innings and allowed two hits while striking out six and walking two in the win. Reliever Clay Schrader pitched the seventh inning and allowed one hit while striking out one batter and walking one.
Waite earned the loss for Erie, pitching four innings and allowing one run on one hit while striking out four batters and walking two.
