Dash players to participate in BaseBald

Shaving heads to fight childhood cancer
August 15, 2012
A few members of the Winston-Salem Dash will shave their heads following their game Friday, August 24 at BB&T Ballpark as part of the BaseBald program, which is designed to fund critical childhood cancer research.

Prior to the post-game fireworks show, select Dash players, including catcher Jeremy Dowdy, outfielder Michael Earley and pitchers Chris Bassitt and Taylor Thompson, will shave their heads in front of the crowd at BB&T Ballpark.

"I am proud to support BaseBald and shave my head to help fight childhood cancer," Bassitt said. "I have been very blessed, and it is time to give back."

The St. Baldrick's Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, created BaseBald last year. In its first year, BaseBald has grown internationally with over 25 universities, colleges, high schools, and youth leagues shaving heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer. BaseBald has partnered with the Dash and the Winston-Salem Journal to bring this program to the Triad.

"As a cancer survivor, I cannot describe how inspirational it is for the Dash to want to take on the endeavor of giving back to childhood cancer," said Chase Jones, Special Events and Family Relations Coordinator for St. Baldrick's Foundation. "Even more importantly, the Winston-Salem community will go beyond just inspiring-we are actually going to save kids' lives."

Members of the St. Baldrick's Foundation will be on hand at the Dash game with volunteer information. Dash fans can also donate money to the cause while in attendance.

The Dash have eight home games remaining in the month of August, including tonight at 7:00 against the Salem Red Sox. To secure your seats for the stretch run of the regular season or the Carolina League playoffs, visit wsdash.com or call the Dash at (336) 714-2287.
