Hawkins' GW-single unplugs Power
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Aug. 16, 2012) -- Courtney Hawkins, the White Sox first round pick in this June's draft, came through with the game-winning hit two outs into the bottom of the 13 inning to help the Kannapolis Intimidators defeat the West Virginia Power, 4-3, on Thursday night. It was the first RBI with Class A Kannapolis for the 13th overall pick.
Joey DeMichele, the Sox third round selection this year, tied the game with a solo home run (2) in the eighth inning.
Reliever Stew Brase (4-4) worked a 1-2-3 frame in the 13th for the win, combining with fellow relievers Max Peterson and Daniel Webb for 5 and 2/3 scoreless innings. Emmanuel De Leon (1-5) suffered the loss for West Virginia.
Intimidators starter Matt Lane worked six scoreless innings of 1-hit ball to open the game, matching a career-high with seven strikeouts along the way. In the seventh inning, Lane gave up a two-out home run to Eric Avila, giving West Virginia a 1-0 lead.
Kannapolis leapfrogged West Virginia with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Mark Haddow, Chris Curley and Grant Buckner opened the inning with three base hits to tie the game. Curley later scored on an error by reliever Porfirio Lopez to give Kannapolis a 2-1 lead.
The Power jumped back in front, 3-2, with two runs in the top of the eighth against Jeff Soptic, scoring runs on an Intimidators error and a balk.
The Intimidators and Power continue this four-game series at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Friday's game is School Supply Donation Night, and fans can get a free GA ticket by donating three school supplies at the Box Office tomorrow.
