Rojas Quality Start and Herrera 3 RBI
August 21, 2012
MYRTLE BEACH, SC- The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, defeated the Salem Red Sox for the second straight night, winning 3-2 on Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field. Odubel Herrera had three hits and drove in three runs and Randol Rojas tossed his fifth quality start. The win is the fourth in five games for the Pelicans.

Rojas went six and one-third innings allowing two runs, only one earned, while striking out six for his team leading ninth win. Salem starter Yeiper Castillo pitched well until the fifth but ended up going four and two-thirds, allowing three runs of which two were earned.

The Pelicans opened up the scoring in the third when Herrera singled with the bases loaded to drive in Edwin Garcia, who singled earlier in the inning. Castillo was able to get out allowing only one run in the third, getting Hanser Alberto to line out into a double play. The Pelicans added two more in the fifth when Castillo started to get wild. Two walks, a passed ball, a wild pitch and a stolen base put Edwin Garcia and Chris Grayson in scoring position on second and third. Herrera then stepped up and lined a single to left, scoring both runners and putting the Pelicans up 3-0. Charle Rosario came in and along with Pete Ruiz stalled the Pelican offense the rest of the way.

Back to back Myrtle Beach errors in the seventh allowed two runs to score. With runners on first and third, catcher Tomas Telis' throw on a Sean Coyle stolen base attempt skipped into centerfield allowing Brandon Jacobs to score, who doubled earlier off the top of the left field fence. Coyle advanced to third on the errant throw. Carson Blair then hit a routine grounder to shortstop Hanser Alberto that rolled up his arm for an error, allowing Coyle to score. Francisco Mendoza was then brought in and Telis made up for his bad throw earlier in the inning by gunning down Blair. Mendoza walked the next hitter David Renfroe but escaped the inning with the lead by striking out Matthew Marquis on a slider away. Mendoza, Jimmy Reyes and closer Ben Rowen shut the door the rest of the way letting the Pelicans escape with a 3-2 win on Tuesday night at TicketReturn.com Field.
