Jose Bautista Leads Bashing of New Britain
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rehabbing Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista did not disappoint Fisher Cats fans on Thursday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Bautista blasted a go-ahead grand slam in the fourth and a monstrous solo homer in the eighth to power the Fisher Cats (55-76) past the New Britain Rock Cats, 9-6.
Bautista's first homer - the grand slam - set the stage for a homer-filled Fisher Cats comeback. Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, Brian Jeroloman singled with the bases loaded to put the Fisher Cats on the board. Rock Cats starter Steve Hirschfeld (L, 8-8) then served up an 0-1 strike that Bautista mashed to left-center field to make it a 5-4 Fisher Cats lead. Bautista's effort was the third rehab grand slam in Fisher Cats history following the lead of Lyle Overbay and John Buck before him.
After the Rock Cats (68-63) tied it in the fifth, the Fisher Cats made more team history in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Brad Glenn, Ryan Goins, and Ryan Schimpf hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to put New Hampshire on top to stay at 8-5. It was just the second time - the first since 2008 - that New Hampshire strung together three consecutive homers.
Before exiting the game, after New Britain pulled with 8-6, Bautista gave the fans one more reason to cheer. He belted an eighth-inning homer onto the roof the Samuel Adams Bar & Grill to complete the 9-6 triumph.
New Hampshire belted five home runs for the first time this year while Bautista became the first individual to drive in five runs in a single game. Those homers made a winner out of Michael Dubee (W, 4-4), one of five relievers that allowed just one earned run over five innings of work.
In addition to Bautista, former Fisher Cat and Eastern League MVP Adam Lind began a rehab assignment with the club. Lind finished the night 1-4 with a first-inning single.
