Black, Schlosser net Carolina awards

Dash slugging first baseman named Carolina League MVP
August 30, 2012
Winston-Salem first baseman Dan Black was named Carolina League MVP and Lynchburg righty Gus Schlosser was selected Pitcher of the Year on Thursday as the circuit revealed its postseason All-Star team.

Black, a 2011 MiLB.com White Sox Organization All-Star, is hitting .319 with 17 homers and 83 RBIs in 124 games for the Dash, duplicating much of his breakout season at Class A Kannapolis last summer. The switch-hitter leads the league in batting and ranks second in RBIs.

Schlosser leads the league in wins with 13 and is third in ERA at 3.28. The righty out of Florida Southern College has 131 strikeouts in 159 1/3 innings through Aug. 28.

Winston-Salem skipper Tommy Thompson was voted Manager of the Year -- he's led the White Sox affiliate to an 83-49 record, the best in the league.

Other notables voted to the team include Red Sox's No. 5 prospect Jackie Bradley Jr., who has since been promoted from Salem to Portland, and Xander Bogaerts, Boston's No. 2 prospect and Salem's shortstop -- also now in Portland -- who ranks fifth in the league with a .302 average.

Ronny Rodriguez of Carolina and Carlos Sanchez of Winston-Salem were both selected as second baseman after tying in votes. Lynchburg's Braeden Schlehuber and Salem's Christian Vazquez also tied at catcher.

Voting was done by league managers, general managers and media. Trainer Jeremy Heller of the Carolina Mudcats was selected in a vote of his peers conducted by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society.

Black gets grand slam -- eventually
