Planeta Honored with Community Award

Salisbury, Md. - On August 30, the final home game of the year, Shorebirds outfielder Mikey Planeta was honored with the Mountaire Farms Shorebirds Community Service Award, given annually to the player that exemplifies outstanding community service.

Planeta, a fan favorite at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, went on numerous community outreach appearances this season. He also was gracious with his time before and after games signing autographs and talking to fans. In addition, Planeta spoke to the crowd about his faith and how it impacts his play on the field after the game on Faith and Family Night.

Roger Marino, the Corporate Community Director for Mountaire Famrs, presented Planeta with his award before the game.

"Mikey Planeta is a great representative of the Delmarva Shorebirds," said Shorebirds general manager Chris Bitters. "We appreciate his willingness to engage our fans and support our mission of being active in the community."

Planeta, 22, also had one of his best seasons on the field in the Orioles minors this season. In 78 games for the Shorebirds, he hit .272 with 27 RBIs. In his final 16 games of the season in August (before going on the DL), he batted .344.
