Darin Ruf Continues to Rack Up Awards
(Reading, Pa.)---The regular season may be finished, but Reading Phillies slugger Darin Ruf continues to collect awards after being named the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of August and Philadelphia Phillies Minor League Player of the Month on Thursday afternoon.
In the month of August, Ruf batted .371 (43-for-116) with 20 home runs, five doubles, and 36 RBI. He also had 28 runs scored, a .451 on-base percentage, and a .931 slugging percentage in 31 games for the R-Phils. The Omaha, Nebraska native's minor league-leading 38 home runs snapped Philadelphia Phillies' first baseman Ryan Howard's single-season record of 37 home runs set back in 2004. His 20 home runs in August tied former Chicago Cubs great Sammy Sosa's professional baseball record of 20 home runs in a single month.
Ruf set two more R-Phils franchise records when he broke Greg Luzinski's 42-year old mark of 287 total bases with 303 total bases in 2012. The 26-year old also became the first player in the 46-year history of the Reading Phillies to record 30 home runs and 30 doubles.
The first baseman on the Eastern League All-Star Team finished August leading the Eastern League in home runs (20), RBI (36), runs scored (28), total bases (108), extra-base hits (25), slugging percentage (.931), on-base percentage (.451), and OPS (1.382) during the month of August and also ranked among the leaders in hits (43-2nd) and batting average (.371-3rd).
Named the Eastern League MVP and Rookie of the Year, Ruf hit .317 (155-for-489) with 38 home runs, 32 doubles, and 104 RBI during the regular reason. Drafted by the Phillies in the 20th round of the 2009 draft, Ruf's standout performance led the R-Phils to their second consecutive postseason playoff berth and third within the past four seasons. He was also named Eastern League Player of the Week twice this season (5/7-5/13 and 8/13 to 8/19).
At the end of the season, Ruf was also named the Paul Owens Award recipient as the best player in the Phillies minor league system.
