Diaz Returns to Indians Organization

The Cleveland Indians announced Friday the club has signed catcher Einar Diaz to a Minor League contract with non-roster invitation to Major League spring training camp.

Diaz, 33, was with the Buffalo Bisons for parts of two seasons. In 1997, he hit .256 (86-336) with 18 doubles, three home runs and 31 RBI in 109 games, helping the team to the American Association Championship. In 1998, Diaz hit .313 (130-415) with 21 doubles, eight home runs and 63RBI in 115 games before being called up to the Cleveland Indians.

Diaz spent the 2005 season as the back-up catcher to Yadier Molina and the St. Louis Cardinals. He hit .208 (27-130) with one home run and 17 RBI in 58 games. Diaz compiled a .995 fielding percentage in 50 games behind the plate for the Cards and made 30 starts (one error in 211 total chances).

Diaz owns a career Major League batting average of .253 (521-2058) in 670 games with Cleveland, Texas, Montreal and St. Louis. He began his professional career in the Indians organization and spent parts of seven seasons with the Tribe from 1996-2002, enjoying a career season in 2001 when he hit .277 (121-437) with 34 doubles, four home runs and 56 RBI in 134 games.
