Russ Adams named IL Batter of the Week

April 21, 2008
The International League announced today that Syracuse outfielder Russ Adams and Pawtucket pitcher Charlie Zink have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from April 14-20. Each is the first member of their respective club to win an IL weekly award this season.

Adams hit safely in all seven games this week, pushing his overall hitting streak to eight games. Adams has posted a .417 average since last Monday with a pair of homers and six RBI. His average was tied for the 3rd-best mark in the League during the stretch, while he led the circuit in runs scored (8) and on-base percentage (.533) and was 2nd in extra-base hits (7) and slugging percentage (.833).

More importantly, Adams sparked the Chiefs to six straight wins to close the week, moving the team into sole possession of 2nd place in the IL North just 1.0 game behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Adams fluctuated between three slots in the batting order this week while serving as both a right fielder and designated hitter, but no matter how manager Doug Davis used him, Adams produced. His ten hits included four doubles and three homers and he also walked six times, raising both his batting average and on-base percentage nearly 100 points since April 13.

The 27-year-old is in his seventh season in the Toronto organization since being chosen by the Blue Jays in the 1st round of the 2002 draft. Adams has played in 294 games with Syracuse dating back to 2004, hitting .281 with 18 HR and 130 RBI in his Triple-A career. He is also a veteran of 278 games in the Major Leagues with Toronto, where he has posted a .248 average with 17 HR and 113 RBI. Adams is a native of Laurinburg, NC.
