Captains Sweep Doubleheader, Back in First Place

(Salisbury, MD) - The Lake County Captains won both games of their doubleheader against Delmarva on Tuesday 7-1 and 11-1. With the two wins the Captains regain first place as Greensboro lost their game. It was another night of outstanding pitching coupled with timely hitting and poor defense by Delmarva. The Shorebirds committed eleven errors in the doubleheader with seven errors in game one.

In game one, Ryan Morris pitched six shutout innings scattering two hits and striking out four as he picked up his third straight win. Morris has not given up a run in his three previous starts totaling 17.1 innings of work. The Shorebirds committed seven errors which is a new season high against the Captains this year. The Captains scored two unearned runs in the top of the second inning. After two were out, Chris Nash reached on an error by the first baseman Anthony Martinez. Doug Pickens hit a ground ball to the second basemen Ryan Adams who threw it past Martinez and into the Captains dugout. With the runners at second and third, Roman Pena hit a grounder to Adams who threw it into the dugout again and both runners scored. The Captains added two more runs in the third inning when Dustin Realini singed home two runs to make it 4-0. The score was upped to 6-0 in the 5th inning when Karexon Sanchez tripled home Adam White. Sanchez would score when the relay throw to third by Adams went into the dugout. This was Adams' fifth error of the game. He would commit six in the doubleheader. Chris Nash added an RBI single in the seventh inning to finish the Captains scoring.

Game two saw the Shorebirds strike first off Captains starter Kyle Landis. With one out in the second inning, Joe Mahoney walked. The next batter Kieron Pope double Mahoney home and the Shorebirds led 1-0. The Captains tied it up off the Shorebirds starter Aaron Odom in the third inning when Sanchez drove home White. The Captains took a 2-1 the lead in the fourth inning when Nash doubled home Matt Brown. The Captains added a run in the fifth inning on a Jeff Hehr RBI single and scored more eight in the sixth inning highlighted by a two run single by Brown. Nash had two doubles and two RBI's in the game. Josh Judy got the win in relief to up his record to 3-0 pitching three scoreless hitless innings and striking out five.

The Captains and Shorebirds wrap up their three game series on Wednesday morning with a 10:35 AM game. RHP Chris Archer (1-1, 0.63) gets the start for the Captains against the Shorebirds LHP Tony Butler. After the game the Captains travel to Kannapolis for a four game series beginning Thursday. The Captains return home on Tuesday April 29 for an eight game home stand with four games each against Greensboro and Kannapolis. The News-Herald High School Home Run Derby debuts after the game on the 29th. The contest goes on after every Tuesday home Captains game with the finals following the game on July 8th.
