Chiefs to team with neighbors on clean-up project

April 25, 2008
Syracuse, New York - Destiny USA officials announced today that their team members will celebrate Earth Day by teaming with representatives from the Syracuse Chiefs, Regional Market and Clear Channel to conduct a clean-up and beautification project.

This joint Lakefront Clean-up activity will take place on Saturday, April 26th, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. between Hiawatha Blvd. East, Alliance Bank Parkway and Park St.

Chiefs players Chip Cannon and Wayne Lydon, Scooch, and members of the team's front office will participate in the project.

"We are excited about the opportunity to participate in this event. The Chiefs have been a part of this neighborhood since 1934 and we are very proud to be able to contribute in a positive manner to the appearance of the area," said Chiefs General Manager John Simone.

Last year, the Onondaga County Resource Agency (OCCRA) reported that over 8,000 Onondaga County residents pitched in on Earth Day to collect trash on our roadsides, streams, and public spaces. Their amazing efforts brought in over 117,000 lbs. of trash.

According to the Environmental Protect Agency (EPA), in April of 1970, twenty million people celebrated the first Earth Day. The theme for the celebration is 'Think globally, act locally.'

Destiny USA officials anticipate there will be a strong turnout of volunteers this year. Volunteers who report to the Hiawatha Boulevard/Park Street location will receive reflective vests and gloves provided by Carousel Center and the Onondaga County Resource Agency (OCCRA). The Carousel Center will provide the tent, hand tools, bags, garbage cans, trucks, first aid kits, security, and refreshments. Participants should wear weather appropriate clothing and shoes.

"The Hiawatha Boulevard/Park Street neighborhood is home to Carousel Center, the Regional Market, Alliance Bank Stadium and many great small businesses. This area is a vital part of our city. I am exited that Destiny USA, Carousel Center, the Syracuse Chiefs, the Regional Market and Clear Channel are teaming up with Central New York community volunteers to clean up our neighborhood in celebration of Earth Day," said Mark Haywood, Destiny USA innovator.
