Ozuna Named Rawlings Gold Glove Award Winner

October 5, 2012
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Minor League Baseball and Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc., announced Thursday that Marcell Ozuna of the Miami Marlins Single-A affiliate Jupiter Hammerheads has been chosen as the recipient of the 2012 Rawlings Gold Glove Award for defensive excellence at the right field position. Ozuna is one of nine honorees selected among qualifying players from the 10 domestic-based, full-season Minor Leagues.

A potential member of the 2013 Jacksonville Suns, Ozuna was a 2012 Florida State League Post-Season All-Star and finished the season with a .986 fielding percentage committing only four errors in 122 games. He also posted a .266 batting average with 13 hits, 24 homeruns and 95 RBI's. Ozuna was signed by the Florida Marlins as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 15, 2008 out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and is considered by Baseball America to be the Marlins second best prospect.

Other recipients of the 2012 Rawlings Gold Glove Award are P Adam Warren (Yankees), C Josh Phegley (White Sox), 1B Hunter Morris (Brewers), 2B Ryan Cavan (Giants), SS Eugenio Suarez (Tigers), 3B Joe Leonard (Braves), LF Derrick Robinson (Royals), and CF Engel Beltre (Rangers).

Last year signaled the return of Rawlings recognizing Minor League Baseball players for their defensive prowess. Current Washington National Steve Lombardozzi was among the players honored in 2011. The St. Louis-based company named a Minor League all-star fielding team for several years in the 1960s. The honor was known as the Rawlings Silver Glove Award during this time.

The Jacksonville Suns are the Double-A Affiliate of the Miami Marlins and are proud members of the Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs. The Suns begin the 2013 regular season on Thursday, April 4th. Season tickets, sponsorships and group events are currently on sale for the 2013 season by calling the Suns front office at (904) 358-2846. The 2013 season is presented by Everbank, official banking partner of the Jacksonville Suns.
