Storm begin annual Reading for Rewards program
The program runs through the beginning of March and will reach almost 60 schools and over 50,000 students in the Inland Empire. Members of the Storm front office, along with Storm mascot "Thunder," will be visiting participating schools to talk to students about the importance of reading in education.
As part of the program, the team will put on a performance of Ernest Thayer's celebrated "Casey at the Bat" poem with student participation. Upon completion of the presentation, Storm bookmarks will be distributed to each student for them to keep track of the books they have read. Once a student has read ten books, he/she returns the bookmark in exchange for two tickets to a 2006 Storm game of his/her choice.
Last season, the Reading for Rewards program saw its highest ever level of participation with over 45,000 bookmarks distributed. This season, production was increased to 50,000 to accommodate an increased demand as more schools become involved. School officials seeking more information on the Lake Elsinore Storm's Reading for Rewards program should contact Storm Assistant General Manager & Director of Community Development Tracy Kessman at (951) 245-4487.
Last season, the Storm won the California League's Southern Division Championship, their fourth division title in club history. April 6, 2006 marks opening day number 13 for the Storm as they play host to the Lancaster JetHawks, first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
