In Focus: Andre Rienzo
It may be the offseason, but 2012 Charlotte Knights right-hander Andre Rienzo has been as busy as ever.
From the Arizona Fall League to the World Baseball Classic qualifier in Panama, Rienzo has been "on" this offseason.
After the season ended for the Charlotte Knights, Rienzo, 24, made his way over to Arizona to participate in the Arizona Fall League. Along with Charlotte teammates Carlos Sanchez, Trayce Thompson, and Santos Rodriguez, Rienzo shined for Salt River. The Brazilian native led the league in innings pitched (24.2), and strikeouts (24), and helped lead the Rafters to the AFL Championship game.
In all, Rienzo made six starts for Salt River and posted a 1-1 record with a 4.74 ERA. He didn’t allow a run over his first two starts (7 IP) and he struck-out 10 batters over that span. His last start in the AFL was on November 10, when he notched his first victory.
Since then, Rienzo has made headlines in Panama as his native Brazil qualified for the World Baseball Classic on November 21 with a commanding win over Panama. In a span of five days, Rienzo’s Brazilian team went from an unknown to the top team in the Panama City bracket.
As for Rienzo, he chipped in and helped send his team to the World Baseball Classic, which will officially get underway in March.
On November 15, Rienzo allowed two runs (one earned) over 3.2 innings pitched in a 3-2 win over Panama.
Five days later, Rienzo, along with four of his 2012 Charlotte teammates, was added to the Chicago White Sox 40-man roster. Ranked as the 18th-best prospect in the Chicago system by MLB.com, things continue to come together for the 24-year-old right-hander.
