El emblemático Miguel Flores, al timón de Sultanes
El nativo de la Colonia Mitras, considerado el último símbolo de la novena regiomontana estará tomando el timón, sustituyendo al puertorriqueño Lino Rivera.
Miguel se convertirá en el décimo manager regiomontano que comanda a la escuadra más tradicional del beisbol mexicano.
El reto será muy grande para el joven timonel que ha ido agregando experiencia en los circuitos minoritarios del beisbol mexicano, en este caso, dirigiendo al equipo combinado de los Sultanes-Rieleros en la Academia de Beisbol de El Carmen, N. L. y posteriormente al equipo Acaponeta en la Liga del Noroeste.
Miguel, quien fuera segunda base del equipo regiomontano durante 14 calendarios dejó cifras muy importantes para los Sultanes de Monterrey en su etapa de pelotero.
NÚMEROS DE MIGUEL COMO PELOTERO
Surgido de la Liga Pequeña Obispado, Miguel Flores pronto demostró su capacidad sobre el terreno de juego.
Era un peloterito aguerrido, entregado, con mucha disposición por aprender y mejorar su desempeño como beisbolista.
Más tarde jugó beisbol amateur de primer nivel con el equipo siendo seleccionado para representar al estado en competencias nacionales, razón por la que decidió dedicarse al profesionalismo.
Su meta era llegar a Ligas Mayores, por lo que hubo de ingresar a un colegio americano con la esperanza de ser drafteado por alguna escuadra de la carpa grande, lo cual aconteció en 1989 al ser elegido por los Indios de Cleveland en la ronda 23 del draft amateur de las Grandes Ligas.
El joven infielder permaneció seis años en la organización de la tribu mayoritaria, ascendiendo paulatinamente en su carrera.
En 1990 jugó para el Burlington en la Liga de Novatos, estafándose 22 bases. Un año más tarde participó con el Kinston, en Clase A avanzada, estafándose 29 colchonetas. Miguel era un tipo muy veloz y sobre todo, muy decidido en sus acciones.
En 1992 fue subido a Canton-Akron, en Doble A, robándose 25 bases, cifra que mejoró al año siguiente con la misma escuadra estafándose 36.
Su ascenso a Triple A se dio en 1994 con Charlotte, repitiendo en esa misma categoría el siguiente calendario con el equipo de Buffalo.
TODO UN SULTÁN
En 1995 hizo su arribo a los Sultanes de Monterrey, adueñándose de la posición durante 14 temporadas, convirtiéndose en el Jugador Más Valioso de la Serie Final por el título de la liga ante los Diablos Rojos del México.
Ese fu el primero de sus tres gallardetes con la novena. Tres años más tarde obtuvo el título de bateo promediando .380. Esa misma temporada eslabonó la cifra de 32 juegos consecutivos conectando de hit.
Miguel fue un estupendo intermediarista, pero su aporte a la ofensiva tuvo una gran notoriedad en el equipo sultán, convirtiéndose en uno de los tres mejores guardianes de la segunda posición junto a otros grandes como Vinicio García y José Manuel Ortiz.
Entre los segundas bases Sultanes ocupa el primer lugar en carreras anotadas con 803, dobles con 231, ponches con 410, bases robadas con 216 y la segunda posición en juegos jugados con 1,130, veces al bat con 4,293, imparables con 1,352, carreras impulsadas 537, bases por bolas 548 y temporadas jugadas con 14.
Además, ocupa el tercer lugar en triples y jonrones con 25 y 49, respectivamente.
Miguel es el segunda base del Equipo Ideal en la época Maiz-Magdaleno, siendo el mejor intermediarista del club en la década de los 90s y la primera del Siglo 21.
El regiomontano desbordó su talento con el bat, obteniendo un liderato de bateo, uno de juegos jugados, tres de veces al bat, cinco de carreras anotadas, cuatro de imparables, dos de dobles, tres de triples, uno de carreras impulsadas, cuatro de bases robadas y uno de bases por bolas.
Debido a su inmensa categoría sobre el terreno de juego, la directiva del club decidió retirar su número 20, hecho acontecido el domingo 9 de julio del 2011.
ESTELAR DE LA COSTA
En el invierno también fue un estelar jugando con Venados de Mazatlán, así como los Naranjeros de Hermosillo, equipo en el que fue Novato del Año en la temporada de 1991-92.
Jugó 16 temporadas, la última de ellas en el 2007, disparando 939 imparables.
El nuevo manager sultán aparece entre los mejores bateadores de todos los tiempos con .277 milésimas.
Ocupa el noveno lugar en carreras anotadas con 520, siendo líder en 1999-00 con el equipo de Hermosillo. Ese mismo año fue líder de hits conectados con 89 y de dobles en 1994-95, renglón en donde ocupa el séptimo lugar de todos los tiempos.
En 1993-94 obtuvo el liderato de bases robadas con 26, ocupando el quinto lugar de todos los tiempos con 184.
