UNEARNED RUN COSTS BANDITS IN 10TH
Quad Cities (28-25) is now 1-3 in four extra-inning games this year, three of which have come against the Bees and two of which were in this series. Burlington (22-33) pulled out an 11-inning win in the series opener on Wednesday night before salvaging a series split with a victory in the 10th inning on Saturday.
The score was tied 2-2 when River Bandits' reliever Wayne Daman entered play in the top of the 10th, making his first appearance in nearly three weeks after being activated from the Disabled List on Friday. The right-hander was greeted by a double off the bat of Shawn Hayes on the first pitch of the inning, and Alwin Perez promptly sacrificed pinch-runner Antonio Jimenez to third. Daman responded by striking out Ryan Eigsti and appeared to be out of the jam when Adrian Ortiz sent a soft tapper back to the mound, but the pitcher bobbled the ball and was unable to make the play as Jimenez crossed the plate for a 3-2 Bees lead.
Quad Cities threatened a comeback in the bottom of the 10th. Kingrey singled with out to chase Chris Chavez from the game, while Anthony Bradley came in from the bullpen and walked the first two batters he faced. But with the bases loaded and one away Matt Arburr struck out looking on a backdoor breaking ball, and shortstop Mike Moustakas ranged behind second base to take care of Domnit Bolivar's bouncer for the final out of the game.
That made a winner out of Chavez (5-0), who tossed 2.1 innings of relief to take his second victory of the series. Bradley (3) earned the save despite making it interesting in the 10th, while Daman (1-1) suffered the loss for Quad Cities.
The River Bandits initially took an early lead in the bottom of the first thanks to the red-hot Kingrey, who is now hitting .442 in his last 11 ballgames. The 23-year-old from Louisiana turned on a two-out pitch and belted a long home run over the Tiki Village in right field, giving the home team a quick 1-0 advantage thanks to his second homer in as many days.
Meanwhile, Quad Cities starter Eduardo Sanchez had allowed just one hit over four shutout innings before Burlington got to him in the top of the fifth. A single and two walks allowed the Bees to load the bases with two away, and Ortiz followed by ripping the first pitch he saw into right field for a two-run double. Reliever Matt Spade then came in and retired the next batter to strand two runners in scoring position, but not before Burlington snagged a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the River Bandits evened the score. The rally started with two outs and the bases empty, as Nick Peoples singled to center and Kingrey walked on four straight balls. With men on first and second, Francisco Rivera worked the count full and laced the pay-off pitch into right field, singling home Peoples to tie the score at 2-2.
