Local teams again battle for GIANT Canaligator Bobble Head

The Spinners are teaming once again this year with IAABO Board 95 Basketball Officials of Greater Lowell to sponsor the Lowell Spinners/ IAABO 95 Holiday Basketball Tournament.

The eight team, three-round, 12-game, high school boys' tournament features teams from the Merrimack Valley Area including Lowell, Chelmsford, Haverhill, Westford, Acton/ Boxborough, Dracut, Pelham (NH) and Londonderry (NH).

The 35th Annual tournament will be held Wednesday, December 27 through Sunday, December 30 at UMass Lowell's Costello Gymnasium on Riverside Street in Lowell.

The tournament is one of the organization's biggest fundraisers, with all proceeds from the tournament benefiting the IAABO 95 Tournament Scholarship Fund. The fund provides donations to deserving participant students who will be attending college. To date, the tournament has donated over $89,000.00 in scholarships to area athletes.

Over the years, the tournament has featured future major college and NBA stars including Patrick Ewing, Rumeal Robinson, Tracy Mitchell, Pat Bradley and Shannon Crooks to name a few.

On Sunday, December 30, the final day's games will be preceeded by a UMASS-Lowell Men's Basketball game, beginning at noon. Admission to the UML game will allow attendees to watch the four remaining games that day, including the championship game at 8:15, where teams will compete for the Spinners Cup - the World's Largest Bobble Head Trophy which is likened after Canaligator - the beloved Spinners' mascot.
