Brewers promote skippers Aviles, Guerrero

Triple-A, Double-A managers remain at respective positions
February 7, 2006
MILWAUKEE -- Two Minor League managers were formally promoted within the Brewers' system on Tuesday, when the team announced coaching staffs for its five affiliates.

Ramon Aviles will move up a level to manage at Class A Advanced Brevard County, and former rookie level manager Mike Guerrero will move up to replace Aviles as manager at Class A West Virginia.

At the upper levels of the organization, Frank Kremblas will return to manage a second season at Triple-A Nashville after leading the Sounds to the Pacific Coast League Championship in 2005, and former Brewers All-Star Don Money will also return for a second season as manager at Double-A Huntsville.

Both the Triple-A and Double-A staffs will return intact. Kremblas will be assisted by hitting coach Gary Pettis and pitching coach Stan Kyles, and Jeff Paxson returns as trainer. At Huntsville, Rich Sauveur enters his second season as pitching coach for the Stars, Sandy Guerrero will be in his fourth season as hitting coach and Dave Yeager will begin his second year as the club's trainer.

At Class A Brevard County in the Florida State League, Aviles will be joined by new hitting coach Willie Aviles (no relation) and returning pitching coach Fred Dabney. Masa Koyanagi enters his second year as the Manatees' trainer.

Guerrero will take over from Aviles at Class A West Virginia after three seasons with the rookie Arizona Brewers. It will be his 12th consecutive season as a coach in the Brewers system. He will be assisted by hitting coach Mike Lum, who spent the last 15 years working in the Chicago White Sox organization, and pitching coach John Curtis, who returns for his second season with the Power. Trainer Alan Diamond also returns.

Curtis, 57, who mentored right-hander and former No. 1 draft pick Mark Rogers last season, was seriously injured in an Aug. 6 batting practice incident. He was struck in the head by a batted ball and underwent several months of rehabilitation.

Ed Sedar will return for a second consecutive season as skipper of the rookie Pioneer League's Helena Brewers and will also serve as the Brewers' Minor League field coordinator and outfield and base running instructor. In 2005, Sedar led Helena to first place in the Pioneer League Northern Division in both halves of the season. Hitting coach Johnny Narron and pitching coach Mark Littell will return for their second seasons with Helena, and David Lake joins the club for his first season as trainer.

The Brewers have yet to name a manager of the rookie Arizona Brewers, but the other positions are set. Steve Cline will begin his sixth season as pitching coach at Arizona, his 26th season as a pitching coach in the Minor Leagues and his 11th year in the Brewers' farm system. Joel Youngblood will return as hitting coach/video coordinator for his third season with Arizona. The Arizona staff also includes first-year pitching coach Yoel Monzon, coach Marlon Nava and second-year trainer Jason Keas.

In addition to Sedar, the Brewers announced the following Minor League coordinators and instructors: Jim Skaalen, hitting coordinator; Jim Rooney, pitching coordinator; Norberto Martin, roving infield instructor; Charlie Greene, roving catching instructor; Frank Neville, medical coordinator; Kenny Patterson, physical therapist; Jeff Mester, Minor League strength and conditioning coordinator and Felipe Mandurraga, Double-A and Triple-A strength and conditioning coach.
