Q&A with NWL president Bob Richmond

Head of the short-season circuit answers 10 questions from MiLB.com
June 16, 2008
Bob Richmond is entering his 25th season as president of the Northwest League. He held the position from 1974-81 and again from '91 to the present. Though Richmond graduated from the University of Oregon's Law School in 1964, baseball has always been his passion, leading him to pursue a career in the game. He began as an attorney for a collection of different teams and leagues, including the NWL, shortly after getting his law degree.

Along with his current role as Northwest League president, Richmond is also a co-owner of the Double-A Texas League's Midland RockHounds.

Where will you be on Opening Day?

I'll be in Boise on Opening Day because we have meetings the day before.

What are you most looking forward to in the 2008 season?

Oh, I always just enjoy the season. I enjoy the baseball part of this job. I just enjoy the games.

Which Minor League player would you pay to watch play this year?

I don't know. I can't answer that question because it is just going to depend on who is playing here.

What is a little-known fact about being a league president?

It is a heck of a lot more work than anybody knows.

What is your favorite part about being league president?

I just enjoy anything to do with the game of baseball. The players, the front office, the fans, the whole experience.

What would you be doing if you didn't work in baseball?

I would probably be practicing law still.

What is your favorite Minor League promotion?

You know, I don't know. There are a number of them, and I'd have to think about it.

What is your favorite Minor League memory?

My favorite Minor League memory I think was when, years ago, Bellingham lost their first 16 games or something like that. This was back in the '70s, but I saw them when they finally won a game in Eugene, Ore., and the Eugene fans gave them a standing ovation.

Have you ever witnessed a no-hitter? If so, when and where?

I haven't seen one.

If I were a Minor League mascot, I would be...

A moose.
