Rattlers can't dig out of early hole

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Burlington Bees built an early 5-0 lead and put the game away late with a three run sixth inning for a 9-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the second half opener for both teams. Adrian Ortiz and Mike Moustakas each had three hits to lead the 11-hit attack. Alex Caldera was the beneficiary as he allowed three runs over six innings for his fifth win of the season.

The Bees (1-0 second half, 31-39 overall) started the game by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Timber Rattler starting pitcher Edward Paredes loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks and a single. A walk to David Lough forced in a run. Clint Robinson followed with a two-run single. Jamar Walton's sacrifice fly drove in the final run of the inning.

Paredes loaded the bases again in the second inning and left without retiring a batter in that frame. Keith Meyer relieved Paredes and threw a wild pitch to allow the fifth run to score. Meyer had to leave the game after being struck by a line drive back to the mound off the bat of Moustakas. Natividad Dilone entered the game for the injured Meyer and got out of the inning without allowing another run to score.

Wisconsin (0-1, 31-36) broke through on the scoreboard in bottom of the third. Maximo Mendez drove in the first run with a double, Juan Diaz followed up with a two-run double to get the Rattlers to within 5-3.

The score remained 5-3 until the Bees scored three times in the sixth. Ortiz drove in the first run of the inning with a single. Moustakas singled in the other two runs and Burlington had an 8-3 lead. The Bees tacked on another run in the seventh on a throwing error.

Three Burlington relievers kept the Rattlers off the board after that and the Bees cruised to a win in the first game of the second half.

Game two of the series is set for Friday evening. Nathan Adcock (2-4, 3.54) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Matt Mitchell (4-5, 4.10) is set to start for the Bees. Game time is 7:05pm.
