Linden a Big Hit in Bisons Sweep
The Bisons outfielder drove home the winning runs in a pair of games as the Herd swept two from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Saturday night from Dunn Tire Park. The Herd captured a 2-1 victory in the completion of a suspended game from Friday night before shutting down the Yanks, 3-0, in second game.
On Friday night, Linden watched through the fog as his teammates dealt with the extreme conditions on Friday night. When the game restarted under clear skies on Saturday night, Linden was still not in the line up.
But the outfielder made his mark on the memorable game when it moved into extra innings. Manager Torey Lovullo used him as a pinch hitter after Jason Cooper led off the 10th with a single and advanced to third on a balk and a sac bunt. With the infield and outfield drawn in, Linden lofted a fly ball to deep right field to win the game.
The game was suspended on Friday night with two outs in the bottom of the ninth because of the fog. The score was 1-1 when the game restarted on Saturday.
Linden's hit in the second game broke up a wonderful pitcher's duel between Buffalo's Matt Ginter and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Jason Jones. Each hurler allowed just one hit through the first five innings. Ginter struck out five while Jones, making his Triple-A debut, fanned seven Bisons.
But Ginter (6-6) worked an inning longer to collect the victory. In his six shutout innings, the veteran did not allow a Yankee past second base. Ginter is now 6-2 in his last eight decisions after starting the season 0-4.
Brian Slocum finished off a one-hitter with three shutout innings of relief. He retired all nine batters he faced to collect his first save of the season.
Jason Cooper also had a big night for the Herd. After scoring the game-winning run in game one, he went 3-3 with an insurance home run in the night cap.
BISONS NOTES: The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was delayed for 48 minutes in the top of the second inning because of rain...The home run for Cooper was his 49th as a Bison. Only five hitters in the Modern Era have collected 50 home runs: Jeff Manto, Russell Branyan, Bill Selby, Alex Ramirez and Richie Sexson)...Brian Slocum's save was his first with the Bisons since April 19, 2006.
