South Bend Silver Hawk's Joel Reinebold Returns to Jamacia

March 11, 2013

South Bend Silver Hawks' Head Groundskeeper Joel Reinebold recently visited Jamaica to continue his efforts of developing youth baseball on the island. This idea to bring baseball to Jamaica started on a whim when Joel had vacationed there, years before. On his first visit in December, Reinebold evaluated the resources needed to begin a baseball program. "This visit was the first time I was able to see the kids in action and provide them with equipment. It was also the first time I had seen play stopped due to a goat being on the field." said Reinebold

Currently spaces from tennis courts to open fields are utilized for baseball practice. The need for facilities and equipment is essential for fully developing the youth program. The goal of Rounding Third, the non-profit Reinbold, South Bend Silver Hawks' Peter Argueta and former Silver Hawks' General Manager John Baxter created, is to raise funds to aid in the development of the program.

"In my 30 years of baseball this was one of the most enjoyable experiences. It was like Christmas morning, the kids eyes were wide and full of excitement. Some have never seen a glove, let alone a baseball." stated Reinebold.

The mission of Rounding Third is to create a baseball culture, develop interplay, and help build self-esteem not only in Jamaica but also locally. Rounding Third and the Silver Hawks are currently holding an equipment drive for the Mishawaka Little League to replace vandalized items. "Our goal is to help kids in any way we can." stated Reinebold!
