Now announcing for the Rainiers, Mike Curto

July 8, 2008

Mike Curto, you are due a confession. That "interview" at Terry's Office last week? When you were told your biographical info was needed for a feature story on baseball broadcasters?

All a ruse, my man, all a ruse.

The feature is on you.

In celebration of your 10th season as the radio voice of the Tacoma Rainiers, the team will hold a surprise party tonight before the annual holiday-fireworks game at Cheney Stadium.

As the odds of accomplishing surprise at a party, before thousands of guests, are more daunting than the odds of accomplishing surprise at a party planned for a spouse or a close friend - the first American proven to execute more than one successful surprise party deserves to oversee the CIA - Rainiers media director Geoff Corkum figured he'd have to spill the beans sooner or later.

So consider the beans spilled, Curto. Allow a few minutes before the first pitch is thrown tonight to shake some hands and accept a cool gift. (Hint: It's bigger than a bread box, and less expensive to maintain than a car.)

And though Corkum hasn't revealed the details of the pregame tribute, don't be surprised if you are asked to deliver a few extemporaneous words. Broadcasters don't go speechless.
