Garland Gets Win in First Start in Two Seasons

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

In his first regular-season start in two seasons, Jon Garland ('98, P) yielded two runs on five hits in six innings for the win (1-0) as the Rockies defeated San Diego 6-3. Garland fanned two and walked two.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Juan Bazan ('00, P) turns 35. The native of Chitre, Panama was signed by the Pirates in 1996 and joined the Crawdads four years later. In 15 games out of the bullpen Bazan went 3-4 with a save and a 1.74 ERA.  He struck out 15, walked 14 and surrendered eight runs - four earned- on 15 hits in 20.2 innings before his release.

Shannon Cabell ('01, P) turns 34. The native of West Virginia was drafted by Pirates in 22nd round in 2000 out of West Virginia St. Cabell went 1-9 with two saves and a 3.45 ERA in 42 games out of the bullpen. In 62.2 innings, Cabell struck out 58, walked 26 and allowed 35 runs - 24 earned - on 73 hits. He was released after the season and did not pitch professionally again.

Danny Sandoval ('98, SS) turns 34. The native of Lara, Venz. was signed by the White Sox in 1996 and went on to provide a steady presence at shortstop for the Crawdads. In 126 games, Sandoval hit .230 with 12 doubles, two triples, 30 RBI, stole 13 bases and scored 43 runs. He holds the team record for most games played at shortstop in a season (126), and also holds the team mark for most assists and double plays in a season (79). Sandoval worked up the White Sox organization ladder, making it to AAA- Charlotte in 2000 before he was sent to the Colorado Rockies in 2004. He went to the Phillies chain in 2005 and it was with them that Sandoval made his big league debut on July 17.  Sandoval spent parts of two seasons with Philadelphia before returning to the minors for good in 2007. He split the 2008 season with AAA- Buffalo (Cleveland) and AAA- Syracuse (Toronto). His last season in pro ball was with Grossetto in the Italian League in 2010.

BIRTHDAYS:

Brian Messer ('01, P) turns 36. The native Shawnee, KS was the Pirates 41st round pick in 1999 out of the Univ. of New Mexico. He appeared in 17 games out of the bullpen for Hickory and went 0-1 with a 5.84 ERA. In 24.2 innings, Messer walked 13, struck out nine and allowed 19 runs - 16 earned - on 27 hits. He was released by the Pirates that season and did not pitch again.

 

Kelvin Vasquez ('13, P) turns 20. The Dominican native joined the Crawdads to begin the 2013 season and made his team debut for Hickory last night.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

Paul Maholm ('04, P/ Atlanta) allowed six hits and a walk and struck out six over 5.2 innings to get the win (1-0) as the Braves blasted Philadelphia 9-2.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Martin Perez ('09, P) turns 22. The native of Venezuela signed with the Rangers in 2007 and debuted with the Crawdads one week after his 18th birthday. On 4/11/09, Perez combined with Tyler Tufts and Fabio Castillo to no-hit the Bowling Green Hot Rods at L.P. Frans Stadium. Another highlight of the 2009 season came on Memorial Day at Hagerstown, Md. when he combined with Jake Brigham to strike out 17 batters to set a team record for a nine-inning game. For the season, Perez went 5-5 with a 2.31 ERA in 22 games, 14 of those starts. In 93.2 innings, Perez struck out 105, walked 22 and yielded 35 runs - 24 earned - on 82 hits. He was promoted to AA- Frisco later that season, and remained there through the 2011 season, when he made the Texas League all-star team and was selected to be the Rangers representative in the Futures Game. Perez pitched for AAA Round Rock in 2011 and 2012 and made his big league debut for the Rangers on June 27, 2012.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

Longwood Univ. defeated Tennessee 7-5 on Tuesday to register the first win against an SEC school in the program's history. The Lancers hitting coach is Jon Benick, a first baseman on the Crawdads 2004 South Atlantic League Championship team.

BIRTHDAYS:

Ryan Doumit ('01-'02, C) turns 32. The native of Moses Lake, Wash. was drafted in the second round in 1999 by the Pirates out of Moses Lake High. He joined the Crawdads for part of the 2001 season, hitting .272 with six doubles, two homers and 14 RBI that season. But it was lineup presence in 2002 that was a key for the team in their South Atlantic League championship run. In 68 games, Doumit hit .322 with 14 doubles, a triple, six homers and 47 RBI. He moved up the ladder in the Pirates system at Lynchburg in 2003, were he was a Carolina League All-Star, before he finally hit the big leagues on June 5, 2005 with the Pirates. Doumit became the starting catcher for the Bucs and remained with the team though the 2011 season before signing with the Minnesota Twins, where he is in his second season.

Phil Klein ('12, P) turns 24. The native of Gahanna, Ohio was drafted in the 30th round in 2011 by the Rangers out of Youngstown, St. As a member of the Crawdads, Klein went 6-0 with eight saves and a 1.90 ERA in 33 games out of the bullpen. In 52 innings, Klein struck out 53, walked 21 and allowed 12 runs on 37 hits. Klein was named to the SAL all-star game. He was promoted later that season to high-A Myrtle Beach and is beginning the 2013 season with the Pelicans.

Sean Burnett ('01, P/ LA Angels) helped the Angels out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by striking out Jay Bruce to end the eighth inning.  The Angels went on to defeat Cincinnati 3-1 in 13 innings.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Derek Kopacz ('98, 1B) turns 38. Signed by the White Sox as a free agent after he played with Sioux City in the independent Northern League. Kopacz saw only 13 games with the Crawdads, when he hit .149 with two doubles and eight RBI. After his release, the native of Lockport, IL returned to Sioux City for four more seasons.  He was sent to Winnipeg late in 2001 then made stops at Schaumburg in 2002 and Joliet in 2002-2003 before retiring.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

Joe Ortiz ('09-'10, P/ Texas) made his major league debut for the Rangers Sunday night in the 8th inning of team's 8-2 loss to the Houston Astros.  Ortiz struck out Carlos Pena, the first batter he faced, before giving up a triple to Justin Maxwell, who later scored in the inning.  Ortiz struck out Rick Ankiel to end the inning.

 

BIRTHDAYS:

Carlos Chantres ('96, P) turns 37.  The native of Miami was drafted in the 12th round by the White Sox in 1994 out of Columbus High School in Miami.  In 18 starts, Chantres went 6-7 with a 3.76 ERA.  He struck out 93, walked 38 and allowed 63 runs - 50 earned - on 108 hits in 119.2 innings.  Chantres worked his way up the White Sox chain, making it as far as AAA- Charlotte in 2000.  From there, he played in the Brewers chain (AAA- Indianapolis) in 2001, then split time at two Tampa Bay affiliates before re-joining Charlotte in 2002.  Chantres bounced through a variety of independent league and Mexican League stops before ending his career at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with the Phillies chain in 2005.  After a few years away from the game, Chantres began his career as a pitching coach with the New York Yankees minor league system and will return for his second season at short-season Staten Island this summer.

 

Jeremy Williams ('12, OF) turns 26.  The native of Geneva, AL was drafted in the 36th round by the Rangers in 2011 out of the Univ. of Mobile.  In 64 games with the Crawdads, Williams hit .304 with 18 doubles, 8 HRs, and 42 RBI.  He was promoted to class High-A Myrtle Beach in July of last season and was recently released by the Rangers at the end of spring training.
