Each week, the Charlotte Knights are giving fans a chance to name the "All Knights Stadium Team" through an online vote. The team will be revealed at Knights Stadium on Thursday, April 11 -- the final Opening Day in the history of Knights Stadium.
This week, the voting turns to starting pitchers and to Facebook. Below are 14 finalists for the best starters in Knights Stadium history. The top two vote-getters will move on to represent the best Knights Stadium starters. Six finalists can be voted on at charlotteknights.com, while the additional eight can be voted on at the Knights Facebook page.
Steve Trachsel - An 8th round selection of the Chicago Cubs in the 1991 Amateur Draft, Trachsel won a team-high 13 games in 1992 for the Knights and finished with a 13-8 mark and a 3.06 ERA in 29 games. He tossed five complete games and two shutouts in his only season in Fort Mill.
Chad Ogea - The ace of the Charlotte Knights championship team in 1993 was Chad Ogea. At just 22 years old, Ogea posted a 13-8 mark with a 3.81 ERA in 29 starts. The Louisiana native tossed a team-high two complete games that season and tied for the league lead in wins (13) and games started (29). A year later, he was back in Charlotte and this time went 9-10 with a 3.85 ERA in 24 games (23 starts). Ogea also completed a league-high six games that season. His 22 combined wins are fourth-best in Knights franchise history.
Julian Tavarez - Tavarez went 15-6 with a 3.48 ERA in 26 starts in 1994 for the Knights. His 15-win season is tied for the best mark in a single season in Knights Stadium history with Brian Cooper's mark in 2003. He led the club in innings pitched that season (176) and tossed two shutouts.
Albie Lopez - As a 21-year-old youngster, Lopez made his Knights debut in 1993 and appeared in three games (two starts) and went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA. The next season Lopez went 13-3 with a 3.94 ERA in 22 games for the Knights. He had three complete games and struck-out 105 batters.
Jon Garland - Garland posted a 9-2 mark with an impressive 2.26 ERA in 16 starts during the 2000 season for the Knights. The 6'6" right-hander had two complete games and one shutout that year. He appeared in five games the following season and went 0-3 with a 2.73 ERA. Garland was a first-round pick of the Cubs in the 1997 draft.
Felix Diaz - Diaz won 20 games for the Knights over parts of three seasons. The Dominican native made his Triple-A debut with the Knights in 2003 at the young age of 22. He posted a 5-7 mark over 27 games with a 3.97 ERA. A year later, he was much better, going 10-2 with a 2.97 ERA in 19 games (17 starts). That season he earned his only promotion to the Majors and made his Big League debut on May 13, 2004 for the White Sox. He returned to Charlotte in 2005 and won five more games as a Knight.
Charlie Haeger - Haeger won a team-high 14 games for the Knights in 2006. The knuckleballer posted a 14-6 mark with a 3.07 ERA in 26 games that season and was an IL All-Star. He led the International League in wins, finished second in ERA, and was fourth in strikeouts with 130. He holds the Knights career record for games started (73), innings pitched (495.2), wins (29), losses (35), and strikeouts (373).
Heath Phillips - Phillips went 13-5 with a 2.96 ERA over 25 games (24 starts) for the Knights in 2006. He tied Charlie Haeger in complete games with two, finishing three behind teammate Tim Redding in that category. For his efforts, was an All-Star and the IL's Pitcher of the Year that season. The following year he once again won 13 games for the Knights. The Evansville, IN native went 13-7 with a 4.30 ERA over 28 starts in 2007 for Charlotte. His 26 wins are second-best in Knights franchise history.
Wes Whisler - Whisler made his Knights debut in 2008 and went 12-10 with a 3.81 ERA in 27 games for the Knights. Whisler played parts of five seasons with the Knights and is second in Knights franchise history in innings pitched 342.2.
Carlos Torres - Torres went 10-4 with a 2.39 ERA in 23 games (20 starts) for the Knights in 2009. The California native also had two complete games and a shutout that season. A year later, he posted a 9-9 record with a 3.42 ERA in 27 games (25 starts). His 3.07 Knights career ERA is third best all-time in franchise history. He also ranks fifth in franchise history in strikeouts with 249. He was an IL All-Star in both seasons.
Daniel Hudson - Hudson showed Knights fans a glimpse of what he could do on the mound in 2009. The Lynchburg, VA native made five starts for the Knights in 2009 and went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA. In 2010, he was back on the hill for Charlotte and went 11-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 17 starts. He fanned 108 batters over 93.1 innings pitched that season and represented the Knights at the Triple-A All-Star Game.
Lucas Harrell - Harrell won 21 games for the Knights over parts of three seasons. His debut season was in 2009 and he went 4-1 with a 3.29 ERA in 11 starts. He then went 10-10 with a 4.58 ERA in 26 starts in 2010. In his last season with the Knights, Harrell went 7-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 13 games (12 starts).
Matt Zaleski - Zaleski has become a staple for the Charlotte Knights since the 2009 season. The Illinois native now appears on a number of Knights All-Time records, including games started (2nd), innings pitched (2nd), strikeouts (7th), and walks (4th).
Charlie Leesman - Leesman went 12-10 with a 2.47 ERA for the Knights in 26 starts in 2012. The Ohio native finished second in the IL in ERA and was tied for third in wins with three other pitchers. His 12 wins helped lead the Knights to their first playoff appearance since 2006. He was named as an International League All-Star in 2012 as well.
