Pawtucket Red Sox Opening Night Roster

April 4, 2013

The Pawtucket Red Sox Opening Night Roster is highlighted by 13 players who at one point last season where members of the 2012 Governors' Cup Champion PawSox (including 10 players who were on the playoff roster the night the PawSox won the Cup last September 13 in Charlotte).  Those were pitchers Pedro Beato, Jose De La Torre, Chris Hernandez, Alex Wilson, and Steven Wright; catcher Dan Butler; INF Jon Hee; and outfielders Bryce Brentz, Jeremy Hazelbaker, and J.C. Linares.  (In addition, OF Alex Hassan was with the club but was on the disabled list).  The other returning players who were with the PawSox during the regular-season were reliever Chris Carpenter and catcher Ryan Lavarnway.  Reliever Jeremy Kehrt, who begins the season on the PawSox DL, was also a member of the 2012 PawSox.

There are also several impressive newcomers to the organization on the PawSox Opening Night Roster led by two outstanding young pitching prospects both acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers last August…23 year-old RHP Allen Webster and 24 year-old RHP Rubby De La Rosa.  Webster and De La Rosa will be joined in the starting rotation by knuckleballer Steven Wright along with lefty Chris Hernandez and off-season free agent signee RHP Terry Doyle, a New England native who has lived (and taught school) in nearby Warwick, RI.  The bullpen will be manned by returning relievers Pedro Beato, Chris Carpenter, Jose De La Torre and Alex Wilson along with off-season acquisitions Anthony Carter, Graham Godfrey, and veteran Oscar Villarreal.

Headlining the young home-grown talent among the position players on the PawSox Roster is 24 year-old OF Bryce Brentz, 25 year-old outfielders Alex Hassan and Jeremy Hazelbaker, 25 year-old catcher Ryan Lavarnway, 26 year-old catcher Dan Butler, 27 year-old INF Jon Hee, and 28 year-old OF J.C. Linares

Of the 12 new players - 6 played in the International League last year including pitchers Anthony Carter (Charlotte), Terry Doyle (Charlotte), Oscar Villarreal (Norfolk), INF/OF Justin Henry (Toledo), INF Brock Holt (Indianapolis), and former PawSox INF Drew Sutton (Gwinnett and Indianapolis).  The other newcomers among position players all played in the Pacific Coast League for at least part of last season including INF Jonathan Diaz (Las Vegas), 1B/OF Mark Hamilton (Memphis), and 1B/3B Brandon Snyder (Round Rock).

New PawSox manager Gary DiSarcina, the former California Angel All-Star SS, returns to the Red Sox organization (he managed Single-A Lowell from 2007-09) after spending the past couple of years in the Angels' front office.  DiSarcina replaces Arnie Beyeler, who led the PawSox to the IL Championship last season and is now Boston's first base coach.  Pitching coach Rich Sauveur returns for his sixth season while new hitting coach Dave Joppie has been promoted from Double-A Portland where he spent the past five seasons working with many of the current PawSox hitters while in Portland. Trainer Jon Jochim begins his fourth season with the PawSox while strength & conditioning coach Doug Griswold is back for his second season to round out the Sox staff.
