Bees Score Four First Inning Runs and Shutout South Bend
The Bees began the scoring by plating four runs in the top of the first inning. David Lough, Johnny Giavotella and Mike Moustakas each hit singles to begin the game. Moustakas' single scored a run. Jason Taylor then hit a double to score Giavotella. The Bees finished out the scoring in the inning when Jamar Walton hit a single that scored both Moustakas and Taylor to give the Bees a 4-0 lead.
The Bees and Silver Hawks played the next five full innings without either team scoring a run. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Moustakas hit a solo homerun to give the Bees a 5-0 lead. The homerun was Moustakas' team-leading 15th homerun of the season.
Matt Mitchell got the start and the win to move to 7-8 on the season. Mitchell worked five innings allowing just two hits with one strikeout and five walks. Joe Augustine pitched the final four innings to pick up his eighth save of the year. Augustine allowed just three hits with two strikeouts and one walks.
The Bees outhit South Bend 11-5. Each of the first seven batters in the lineup had at least one hit for the Bees. Taylor led the way going 3-4 with a run and an RBI. Both Giavotella and Moustakas had two hits in the game with Moustakas also recording two RBI.
The Bees return home to Community Field to begin a six-game series Tuesday night. The Bees will play host to the Dayton Dragons. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Danny Gutierrez is the scheduled starter. The game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com.
