Tiger Town USA to host East Coast Pro Showcase

July 31, 2008
The 2008 East Coast Professional Showcase is scheduled to take place from July 31-August 4 at Tiger Town USA in Lakeland. The festivities will begin tonight with a banquet at the Polk Theater. Beginning on Friday, the most talented amateur players east of the Mississippi River will participate in several baseball games.

The objective of the showcase is for Major League Baseball scouts to form six teams with the most talented high school underclassmen from their prospective regions. Participants have the chance to display their talent and skills for an opportunity to play professional baseball. Participating Major League Baseball organizations include: the Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, New York Yankees, and San Diego Padres.

Many former showcase players currently play in the major leagues. A few of them include: Josh Hamilton, Jake Peavy, Mark Teixeira, and B.J. Upton. Eighty three showcase players were selected in the June 2008 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Of the individuals selected, six players were selected in the first round, including the 1st overall pick, Tim Beckham. Lakeland Flying Tigers pitcher, Rick Porcello participated in the 2006 showcase and was selected in the first round (27th overall) of the June 2007 amateur draft by the Detroit Tigers.

All games are scheduled to occur at Joker Marchant Stadium. The showcase is not open to the public, however major league scouts, college coaches, and agents/advisors are welcome to attend for a fee.
