Redbirds Suffer Extra-Inning Defeat, 5-3
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The New Orleans Zephyrs plated two runs in the top of the 11th inning to beat the Memphis Redbirds, 5-3, on Tuesday evening at AutoZone Park in the second game of four-game series. The loss was Memphis' second last at-bat defeat of the season.
Trailing 3-2 entering the top of the ninth inning, Redbirds reliever Victor Marte surrendered a sacrifice fly to send the game to extras. Two innings later, Gorkys Hernandez lined a two-run single to right field off reliever Eric Fornataro for a 5-3 New Orleans lead.
Second baseman Kolten Wong extended his season-opening hitting streak to six games with a 3-for-6 effort. Jermaine Curtis added two hits, two RBIs, and a pair of walks.
Brock Peterson extended his hitting streak to 15 games leading back to August 26 of last season.
A walk and two consecutive singles by Ed Lucas and Koyie Hill gave New Orleans a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third inning against Nick Additon. With a runner on third and one out, Ben Lasater hit an RBI groundout for the club's second run.
Memphis scored all three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to go ahead 3-2. After a Chad Huffman walk from reliever Dan Jennings, Peterson cranked an RBI double off the center field wall. Three batters later with the bases juiced, Curtis hit a go-ahead, two-run single up the middle to give the Redbirds the lead.
Marte came into the close out the game, but quickly gave up a leadoff double to Matt Downs, who then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Kevin Mattison would bring home the tying run with a sacrifice fly.
Additon yielded two runs on five hits in five innings of work for a no-decision in his first start of the season. The left-hander also struck out six in 87 pitches (57 for strikes).
Maikel Cleto struck out two over two scoreless innings. Jorge Rondon pitched a scoreless frame while striking out one.
Marte blew his second save in two chances, giving up one run in two innings. Fornataro (0-1) was charged with the loss with his two runs in the eleventh.
Tom Koehler tossed six shutout innings, but came away with a no-decision. Jordan Smith earned the win with two scoreless innings. Chris Hatcher struck out two for the save.
The Redbirds and Zephyrs continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Wednesday at AutoZone Park. Left-hander John Gast (1-0, 0.00) toes the rubber for Memphis against New Orleans left-hander Brad Hand (1-0, 0.00).
