Naturals Rally to Spoil Midland's Home Opener
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Mitch Canham hit the go-ahead home run in a four-run eighth inning as the Northwest Arkansas Naturals came from behind to defeat the Midland RockHounds 7-5 on Thursday. Canham played in 45 games for the RockHounds in 2011.
Trailing 5-2 entering the eighth inning, the Naturals' rally started with a one out single by Angel Franco off of RockHound reliever Paul Smyth. Orlando Calixte followed with a double, and Rey Navarro brought Franco and Navarro home with a double to cut the Midland advantage to one run. Following a pitching change, Canham greeted new Midland pitcher Kyler Newby with a two-run home run to center field, giving the Naturals a 6-5 lead
Northwest Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. RockHound starter Zach Neal walked Franco and gave up a single to Calixte. After Navarro moved the runners up a base with a groundout, Franco scored on a groundout by Canham to give the Naturals the early lead.
Naturals starter Jason Adam worked his way out of trouble in the second and third innings, but wasn't as fortunate in the fourth. Adam gave up a leadoff single to Jeremy Barfield and a one-out single to Miles Head. Jefry Marte doubled to score Barfield, with Head coming home on a single by Ryan Lipkin. Midland scored another run on a fielder's choice, giving the RockHounds a 3-0 lead and ending Adam's night. Nick Rogers retired the side, but not before giving up two runs that were charged to Adam.
Canham scored the second run of the game for the Naturals in the seventh on a single by Manny Piña. Canham reached on a one-out double. The Naturals added an insurance run in the ninth, as Calixte hit his second single of the night to score Alex McClure.
Calixte went three-for-five with two singles, a double, RBI and run scored. Canham went two-for-five with a double, home run, two runs scored and three RBI.
Andy Ferguson picked up his first Double-A win in relief. The Benton native didn't give up a hit in two scoreless innings. Edwin Carl struck out four batters while giving up one hit in two innings to earn the save. Newby takes the loss for Midland, giving up two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
Sugar Marimon (0-1, 3.18 ERA) is scheduled to start tomorrow for the Naturals. He will face Josh Bowman (1-0, 1.80 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
