Brett Hayes Sets Werner Park Record with 7 RBI Day in 11-2 Omaha Win

Storm Chasers have not lost a day game at home to Nashville since May 11, 2009
April 14, 2013

Omaha, NEB. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (6-5) won their first home day game this season by a score of 11-2 over the Nashville Sounds (4-6), powered by a two home run, seven RBI day by catcher Brett Hayes.  It was Hayes' first game at Werner Park as a member of the Storm Chasers, and the seven RBI were the most by any player in the 147-game regular season history of the stadium.

Hayes was 4-for-4 in the game, the most hits by any Chasers batter this season, and he got the scoring started by lacing a 2-RBI double to in the first inning.  After Nashville tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning, Hayes smashed a two-out, three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the inning to give the Chasers the necessary runs for the win.  Hayes stepped to the plate a triple short of the cycle in the seventh inning and went opposite field for a two-run shot and his second homer of the game, the first multi-homer game for an Omaha player this season.

The seven RBI by Hayes were the most by any Storm Chasers player since Lorenzo Cain also equaled that amount on May 14, 2011 at Colorado Springs.  The most RBI at Werner Park before Hayes' big day was six RBI by Ruben Gotay as a member of the New Orleans Zephyrs on June 2, 2011.  The record for most RBI by a Storm Chasers player at Werner Park previously was held by two catchers, as Lucas May collected five RBI for Omaha on May 31, 2011 against New Orleans and Salvador Perez matched that mark on July 29, 2011 against Albuquerque.

The 11 runs scored were the most by the Storm Chasers in a game all season, and the first time they had scored double-digit runs.  The Omaha pitching staff of Brian Sanches, Louis Coleman and Blaine Boyer shut out the Nashville offense after the third inning, and combined for 10 strikeouts in the game.  The Storm Chasers have totaled double-digit strikeouts in seven of eleven games this season, and currently lead the PCL with 110 punch-outs.

Omaha improved their record in day games at Werner Park to 24-14 all-time, as well as 7-0 against the Nashville Sounds.  The Storm Chasers will look to win an eighth straight day game against the Sounds as they send out left-hander Will Smith (1-1, 4.50 ERA) against Nashville right-hander Hiram Burgos (0-1, 1.80).  Burgos will be the third top-20 prospect in the Milwaukee organization Omaha has faced in the four-game series.  First pitch will be 11:05 a.m., and the Storm Chasers will celebrate Jackie Robinson Day in professional baseball by wearing specialty "42" jerseys while officially retiring the baseball legend's number at Werner Park.
