Lancaster Comeback Keeps Streak Alive
For the fourth time in now what has become a 10-game losing streak, the Mavs blew a lead in the seventh or later as they fell 8-5 Tuesday night in Lancaster. The JetHawks completed a sweep of the Mavs and ended up winning 13 of 23 meetings this season.
Leading 5-2 going into the bottom seventh, the JeHawks started a rally against Steve Uhlmansiek (2-4) with a solo homer by Aaron Reza. Two singles and walk later the bases were loaded for Ryan Kalish, cleared them with one swing on a double to give Lancaster its first lead at 6-5.
The Mavs couldn't stop the JetHawks from adding two insurance runs in the eighth. Yamaico Navarro hit a two-run single to put the game to bed.
Cody McAllister retired the Mavs in order to earn his fifth save of the season.
The Mavs were able to break out of their funk at the plate, but weren't as successful as they should been. Although they had 11 hits, including four for extra bases, they left eight men in scoring position.
They took a 1-0 lead in the first when a throwing error by Luis Segovia allowed Travis Scott to score. Three more came in the third. Ronnie Prettyman drove home the first with an RBI double, his first hit in 19 at bats.
Scott followed with a two-run double to make it 4-0. The Mavs catcher finished his night 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Lancaster got on the board in the fourth with a solo homer by Mike Jones. The Mavs responded with a run the next inning on a sac fly by Ogui Diaz.
The loss also wasted another decent start for the second straight night. Travis Mortimore was able to overcome his recent struggles and allow two runs in 5.1 innings. He struck out four and walked none.
The win went to Felipe Garcia (1-0) instead who threw two scoreless innings.
After the Mavs got behind for the first time all night, the next six batters all went down in order.
The Mavs hope returning home after going 0-for-6 on the road trip can snap the streak. They'll take on the Visalia Oaks at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday to begin a three-game set. Call 246-MAVS for tickets.
