Phillies purchase Carpenter's contract

Righty added to bullpen; Tracy designated for assignment
August 27, 2008
PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies added a right-handed arm to their bullpen on Wednesday when they purchased the contract of Andrew Carpenter from Double-A Reading.

To make room for Carpenter on the active roster, the Phillies designated infielder Andy Tracy for assignment.

Carpenter, who has not yet pitched at the Major League level, has started for both Reading and Class A Clearwater this season, recording a 9-11 record in 24 starts, with a 4.68 ERA.

The 23-year-old has been especially solid, however, in his last five starts for Reading, a span in which he has recorded a 4-1 record with a 3.44 ERA.

"[It's] really exciting," Carpenter said. "This is what I've been working for my whole life. This is what I've wanted to do my whole life."
