Crawdads Alumni Report April 28

Deglan's Blast Gives Myrtle Beach Walk-off Win
April 22, 2013

Sunday, April 28

HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY:

Kellin Deglan ('11-'12, C/ Myrtle Beach- Texas) clubbed a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Pelicans a 7-4 walk-off win over the Potomac Nationals. The home run was Deglan's third of the season.

BIRTHDAYS:

Jason Gray ('96, P) turns 36. The Floridian native was drafted by the White Sox in the 22nd round out of Coconut Creek High in 1995. In 13 starts, Gray went 3-8 with a 4.59 ERA, which included a complete-game shutout. In 68.2 innings, Gray struck out 61, walked 28 and allowed 45 runs (35 earned) on 67 hits. His weakness though was the home run ball, as he gave up 12 of them during his limited time at Hickory. Gray split time in 1997 between rookie stops in the Gulf Coast League and rookie Bristol before his release. He pitched last for Adirondack in the Independent Northern in 1998-1999.

Romulo Sanchez ('05-'06, P) turns 29. The native of Carora, Lara, Venezuela was signed as a free agent by the Pirates in 2004 after his release from the Dodgers. He came to Hickory at the tail end of the 2005 season and made ten starts, going 3-3 with a 4.70 ERA. Sanchez returned for much of the 2006 campaign and pitched mostly out of the pen. In 21 games (three starts), Sanchez went 0-3 with four saves and a 7.03 ERA. All total, he struck out 52 batters in 94.1 innings, walked 37 and surrendered 70 runs (60 earned) on 110 hits. He climbed the Pirates organizational ladder quickly and made his debut with the Bucs on 8/26/07. He bounced between Pittsburgh and AAA-Indianapolis until the Pirates traded him to the New York Yankees in May 2009. Sanchez had a cup of coffee with the Yankees in late 2010 and then was released the next spring. He moved on to Japan for the 2011 season, then went to AAA- Durham (Tampa Bay) in 2012 before he was released in August. Sanches started this season with Tabasco in the Mexican League but was ineffective and was let go.

Euvi Solano ('05-'06, 2B) turns 31. The native of San Cristobal, D.R. was signed as an international free agent by the Pirates in 2004. He played one game at Hickory in 2005 (0-for-3), then returned the next season where he hit .236 in 37 games with five doubles, a triple, a homer and 10 RBI. Solano was released by the Pirates, and then finished out his career in 2007 with Worcester and Sussex in the independent Can-Am League.
