El Guapo to the rescue

April 20, 2008
(Pawtucket, RI) - David Pauley was scheduled to start Sunday for the PawSox. Instead, the right hander was held back by Boston in case the flu prevents Clay Buchholz from making his scheduled start on Monday against Texas. Edgar Martinez, the converted catcher filled in and did a terrific job. The Venezuelan righty, known as El Guapo (the handsome one) threw 4 and a third shutout innings at the Buffalo Bisons, scattering 4 hits, leading the PawSox to a 5-1 win. Jon Switzer struck out four batters in 2 and a third innings of relief for his first victory (1-0) of the season. Eric Hull and Lee Gronkiewicz finished it off for the Sox (10-8). Jeff Bailey belted his second homer in three days, a 3-run blast that provided Pawtucket with more than enough offense. Keith Ginter added a 2-run shot for good measure. The series finale takes place on Monday at 12:05 p.m. at McCoy. Kyle Snyder (0-0) starts for Pawtucket against Jeremy Sowers (0-2). Before the game Sunday, Bobby Kielty was placed on the disabled list (hand soreness) retroactive to Saturday. Outfielder Bryan Pritz was activated.
