Rays reveal Minors award winners
Ryan Royster and Jeremy Hellickson were name the Player and Pitcher of the Year for the Vero Beach Devil Rays 2008 campaign.
Royster led Vero Beach with a .265 batting average, a .318 on-base percentage and 58 RBI. He also tied for first in the triples category with three on the season. He was second on the club with nine home runs, a .373 slugging percentage and 113 hits. Royster was the Rays Minor League Player of the Year last season.
Hellickson was named Vero Beach's Pitcher of the Year for 2008, after playing with the squad for half the season before a promotion to Double-A Montgomery in June. During his stint with the Devil Rays Hellickson posted a record of 7-1 with a 2.00 ERA. In 76.2 innings he struck out 83, while walking just five (16.6 SO/BB). He finished the season with 162 strikeouts to lead the Rays system and earn his second Pitcher of the Year award after receiving the same honor in 2006 when he played with Hudson Valley.
The Tampa Bay Rays named outfielder Fernando Perez Minor League Player of the Year and left-handed pitcher David Price Minor League Pitcher of the Year. A full list of 2008 award winners can be found below:
