Cubs complete four-game sweep of Cards
Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Cubs finished off a four-game sweep of the Palm Beach Cardinals at Jackie Robinson Ballpark with a 3-1 win on Wednesday morning.
Cubs starter RHP Ben Wells worked seven extremely strong innings and allowed just one run on three hits. After surrendering just one hit but walking five over 5.2 innings in his previous outing, Wells walked just one Cardinal and struck out three. It took Wells just 70 pitches to work through the seven innings. The 20-year-old improved to 3-2 on the season with the win and lowered his ERA to 3.31.
With the Cubs trailing 1-0 after the Cardinals scored their lone run in the fifth, Ben Carhart, who came into the game scorching-hot, led off the fifth inning with a double and came around to score on an 2B Anthony Giansanti single to left to tie the game at 1-1.
In the sixth, after Palm Beach starter LHP Tim Cooney retired the first two Cubs quickly, RF Jorge Soler doubled to left-center field and stole third, 1B Dustin Geiger walked, and Carhart hit a two-run go-ahead double down the right-field line to put the Cubs up 3-1.
Carhart finished the series 8-14 with four doubles and seven RBIs.
RHP Eduardo Figueroa earned his first save of the season after working scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the Cubs. Figueroa did load the bases with two outs in the eighth, but struck out CF Nick Longmire to end the inning.
Wednesday's game was played in a season-low one hour and 49 minutes.
Giansanti finished 2-3 for Daytona.
With the win, Daytona has now won four games in-a-row and six of its last seven. The Cubs will hit the road to begin a seven-game road trip beginning on Thursday with a three-game series in Lakeland. First pitch at Joker Marchant Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
