Rehabbing Angel Alberto Callaspo Homers For 66ers

May 1, 2013

San Bernardino, CA- -Angels infielder Alberto Callaspo is making a serious case that he is ready to return to the majors. Callaspo went 2-for-4 with a home run for the Inland Empire 66ers (14-12) Wednesday, but still fell to the Lancaster JetHawks (15-10) 5-3.

Inland Empire scored early in the day game with three hits in the first inning including an RBI single from Brian Hernandez. The JetHawks tied it up with three straight hits off Eswarlin Jimenez in the 3rd but that was the only run they would get off the 66ers starter who had to exit early after an injury covering first base in the 6th inning.

The 66ers were down a run entering the 7th inning when Callaspo struck a deep fly ball well over the left field wall for his first home run and second hit of the rehab assignment. Callaspo exited the game after the at bat but is expected to make one more appearance with Inland Empire on Thursday.

Despite the home run Lancaster seemed to have luck on their side in the game. A sun aided bloop single with two outs in the 7th inning netted the JetHawks two runs, and on the mound Lancaster closer Kenny Long was able to make it through a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the 8th inning without allowing a run to preserve the 5-3 victory.

The Inland Empire 66ers will try to win the series on Thursday when they host the Lancaster JetHawks for the series finale at 7:05 PM on Thirsty Thursday presented by Hangar 24 at San Manuel Stadium.
