Jays come back 3 times in 6-5 win

SS Peter Mooney and C Pierce Rankin come through in the eighth inning as Dunedin takes Game 1
May 5, 2013

Dunedin, FL - During the course of Sunday's 6-5 win over the Bradenton Marauders (11-19), the Dunedin Blue Jays (18-11) trailed 1-0, 2-1 and 5-4. When the D-Jays retook the lead in the eighth inning, they made sure it was for good.

SS Peter Mooney hit a game-tying single with runners on the corners and C Pierce Rankin followed with the go-ahead base hit, setting up RHP Blake McFarland (S, 7) for his league-leading seventh save of the season.

1B Jon Talley made his triumphant return to Dunedin, blasting a two-run home run off starter Zack Dodson to put the Jays on top 4-2 in the fifth inning. Dunedin's bullpen couldn't hold the lead, as starter RHP Jesse Hernandez walked the first two hitters he faced in the sixth, forcing manager Bobby Meacham to remove him from the game. Up until that point, Hernandez had allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

LHP Efrain Nieves (BS, 1) was then summoned for his first relief appearance of the season. He walked the next hitter to load the bases, and gave up a two-RBI single to Alen Hanson, tying the game at 4-4. Nieves pitched the seventh inning as well, and gave up a lead off home run to Gregory Polanco, putting the Marauders in front, 5-4. Polanco went 3-for-5 and missed the cycle by a triple.

RHP Scott Gracey (W, 3-0) got the win after pitching a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout, while Bradenton closer Zach Thornton (BS, 3)(L, 2-1) blew his third save of the season as he gave up both runs in the eighth.

RHP Marco Grifantini (1-0, 1.29 ERA) will make his first start of the season in tomorrow's 6:30 p.m. game, squaring off against RHP Adrian Sampson (0-0, 5.16 ERA).
