May 8, 2013

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs and the Maine Children's Cancer Program officially kicked off the 2013 TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids campaign today with a media home run derby held at Hadlock Field. The media home run derby raised $1,195.00 for the program.

Sea Dogs' Pitching Coach Bob Kipper announced that the pitching staff would be making another $1,000.00 donation to the program and encouraged fans to join the Sea Dogs' team in striking out cancer in kids. Fans can join the Sea Dogs' fundraising team for the Maine Children's Cancer Program by visiting www.seadogs.com.

The TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program is a fundraising partnership between the Sea Dogs, TD Bank, Anthem, WMTW News 8, Maine Medical Center and the Maine Children's Cancer Program. For every strikeout thrown by a Sea Dogs pitcher, money is generously donated by numerous businesses and individuals with TD Bank leading the way with $10.00 per strikeout. The program has raised over four million dollars in the program's 19 year history.

The Sea Dogs pitching staff currently ranks second in the Eastern League with 287 strikeouts. Brandon Workman leads the way with 42 punch outs.

The Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program was developed in 1995 when the Portland Sea Dogs and Peoples Heritage Bank teamed together to combine their resources to support a community activity to enrich the quality of life in Maine. Together they created the season long fundraising activity for the Maine Children's Cancer Program, in which people pledge any amount of money for each Portland Sea Dogs' pitcher strikeout. Through the years the program has evolved into the largest fundraising program for the Maine Children's Cancer Program.

Today's event marked the official start to fundraising effort of the 2013 TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program. Media members and sponsors of the program were each allowed three hits, depending on how far the hit went, the Sea Dogs donated a pre determined amount of money. A hit past the pitchers mound was $20, reaching the outfield on the ground was $30, outfield in the air $40, warning track $75, off the wall $100, and a home run $500.
